Good News: Dominic Thiem Does Not Need Surgery on His Injured Right Wrist
- Updated: October 5, 2021
By Chris Oddo | @TheFanChild | Monday October 3, 2021
Good news for Dominic Thiem: The Austrian will not have to undergo wrist injury and can begin flexibility and strengthening exercises as he prepares to make his return to the courts in the coming months.
“As you all probably know I had a very important day today,” said Thiem in a video on social media. “I was in Belgium to decide if I needed surgery for my wrist or not and luckily I have very, very good news. I won’t need surgery, it’s looking stable and it’s looking good, my wrist. The next week of course I have to make it more flexible, I have to strengthen my wrist, I have to do everything to prepare to slowly start playing tennis again, and I’m looking forward so much to that, it’s been a pretty long time without the racquet, I honestly miss it.”

Thiem, 28, has not played since June in Mallorca, where he injured the wrist in a match against Adrian Mannarino. The Austrian played 18 matches in 2021, and went 9-9 overall.
He also was bothered by foot and knee issues and the general fatigue that he experienced after winning his first Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2020. “A huge thanks to all the fans who supported me during those long months and weeks, I don’t think I would have made it through without you.”
